Travel insurances: We have tested and sorted out only the best for your country! - Tips and tricks incl.

You are searching the best travel insurance for the best price? Here you will find your insurance. Take some time and read through the following points before you choose a travel health insurance. It’s worth the effort! Especially for backpackers, work & traveller, frequent travellers and everybody else who loves travelling as much as we do.

What might happen during your journey?

Those who have spent some time abroad might be able to tick one or another of these points. Especially, if you are forced to spend some days in a hospital because of such an unexpected event, it might get very expensive quite easily. Prevention is the name of the game!

Be smart!
Stay healthy and save money.

“To travel is always good for you, that’s for sure!”

A lot of potential providers have been gathered in order to examine and compare them carefully. Our criteria were prices (50 %), benefits (35 %) and service/reliability (15 %).

Obviously, insurance benefits are crucial! On closer examination we came to realize that price disparities tend to be tremendous while benefits oftentimes stay identical. There were insurances which were more expensive by over 200 % but still offered almost the same benefits. That’s why we gave more weight to the price in our test.

  1. At first, we discarded the most expensive travel health insurances.
  2. Thereafter, we adjusted the benefits to your requirements (backpacking, world trip, frequent travellers, trekking, adventure; see also “What to consider regarding travel health insurances”) and removed half of them once again.
  3. Of the remaining, we pulled the provider whose demeanour was less reliable and whose reputations were rather poor.
  4. With the last insurances, we examined the overall package (price, benefits, flexibility, service, concession and know-how of the insurer) and eliminated another two.

The result of our tests:
The three most attractive travel health insurances for your requirements with the best price. You will find our three travel health insurance recommendations for almost all citizens or countries below.

If there exists a state-run social health care system in your country, you have to make sure that there is a bilateral treaty regarding this matter between your country and the country you are travelling to. This treaty is valid mainly for European countries but not for all. For most countries in the world those treaties are invalid and you will need separate coverage. For travels of more than 6 weeks, we recommend long-term travel health insurance.

Especially backpackers, globetrotters and adventurers know that their way of travelling is incredible fun, but carries higher risk with it, simultaneously. But still, don’t worry or be anxious. All you have to do is think for yourself and be precautious. Why?

  • Food, food, food… Constipation and diarrhoea caused by alien food that our stomachs are not accustomed to.
  • Accidents and injuries
  • Alien germs such as Malaria, dengue fever, hepatitis, viral diseases or typhus
  • Scooter/car/bike/motorbike in foreign countries with other customs and rules. Oftentimes without being required to wear a helmet.
  • Diving, snorkelling and swimming. E.g. poisonous stings, too high pressure on your ears due to depth, injuries caused by rocks and stones, etc.
  • Hikes in unfamiliar forests and jungles.
  • Other customs and practices often affect your health

Quite often, we tend to take greater risks when travelling because we want to experience something above the ordinary. Rightly so! By having proper insurance protection, you reduce possible consequences and complications. It’s better to plan ahead than being forced to learn it the hard way.

Tip: Lots of backpackers suffer from diarrhoea and constipation, especially in the beginning of a trip. There are good natural products to prevent that. Here, we recommend natural products by Ringana, which are available in capsules or in powder form. You will find more on that topic on our pages concerning “Health”.

Good.

In many countries in the world medical treatment is even better than here. We have always felt we were in good hands in foreign hospitals. Exceptions are really remote areas or non-accessed regions only. But even there you will get medical treatment. So, don’t worry!

If you travel less than 6 weeks within a year, an additional travel health insurance is not obligatory.

  • Check the coverage of your credit card. Asking your bank consultant to send you all necessary information is a good idea. Attention! Oftentimes, these benefits are only medium and don’t always cover 6 weeks. For extended protection, we recommend a travel health insurance valid one year. Please note that even though valid a whole year, these insurances cover only journeys of less than 6 weeks each!
  • A one-year travel health insurance, which is often available for €/$ 5 to 20 annually (except of the US), is enough if you travel less than 6 weeks within a year.

If you travel more than 6 weeks within a year, an appropriate travel health insurance is very advisable! The best and cheapest way is a so-called long-stay travel insurance. Below you will find our test winners!

Tip: Watch the price if you already have a travel health insurance which is valid a whole year and you want to extend it for a longer journey. Oftentimes, they are tremendously exaggerated. For travels of more than 6 weeks we recommend an appropriate travel health insurance. If you travel 12 weeks for example, you can take out an insurance policy for 6 additional weeks. Usually, that’s cheaper!

Tip: If your credit card covers the essential points for journeys of less than 6 weeks, you won’t need an additional insurance at all costs. (See: “What to consider regrading travel health insurances”)

As a general rule: The longer you intend to travel, the wider-ranging your insurance coverage is supposed to be. If your stay abroad is long-term, the likelihood of an illness, an accident, an injury or theft increases. If you want to compare coverage of various providers on your own, we recommend to have a closer look on following points:

  • 100 % of ambulant/stationary treatment should be covered
  • 100 % of medication and surgical dressings
  • 100 % of aids due to an accident
  • 100 % of surgeries
  • 100 % of diagnostic x-ray
  • 100 % of ambulance transports
  • 100 % of return transports
  • 100 % of dentures/dental treatment (at least € 2.000)
  • Excess as little as possible (maximal € 50)

Optional extras:

  • Compensation for ambulant/stationary treatment (daily benefits)
  • Travel indemnity insurance (at least basic coverage)
  • Luggage insurance (if your luggage has some value; e.g. notebook, mobile, Kindle, etc.)

Tip: If these extras are already included in your insurance, it’s nice to have. However, it is not must-have. Only when it comes to travel indemnity insurance, we recommend basic coverage at least which is available for only a few euros.

Tip: A lot of expensive insurances offer some exorbitant insurance sums. Sometimes, they can look quite appealing. Don’t let yourself be irritated by them. When it comes to teeth for example, they come up with sums that no accident can ever cause. Rely on your common sense and don’t be confused. If you are uncertain, take one of our recommendations. Those have been carefully examined by us.

Do’s

  • Check price-benefits-ratio of potential insurances
  • Use your common sense during the process of selection and choosing
  • The longer you intend to travel, the closer you are supposed to look into the matter
  • Try to prevent digestive problems – we recommend Ringana. See “Health” XXX

Don’ts

  • Don’t be confused because of the high insurance sums of various insurances companies (e.g. dental prosthesis up to € 100.000)
  • Without USA/Canada, insurance is supposed not to cost more than € 1,50; including USA/Canada it’s not supposed to be more than € 3,00
